Welcome to Ed Hineline Jr. Photography. I started these pages out of my own frustration to easily find clear and concise information about photography equipment and techniques to improve my skills. I want to know how great images are shot. I want to know if it is standard practice to use Photoshop or some other post processing software to manipulate images. I want to know what makes a photographer great in today's world of digital cameras as opposed to those that shot images with film? What makes a photograph great, the original image or the post processed image?
What I've learned is that it's a little bit of everything that's specific to the personality of the photographer. Great photographers have the technical expertise to shoot the image with the correct camera settings, lens, lighting, follow the rule of thirds, and also use appropriate post processing when necessary. The post processing may be through software manipulation or old fashioned darkroom techniques. Every great photographer has had some type of training, either through formal schooling, mentors or apprenticeships.
The art of taking pictures has taken on a whole new identity with the invent of digital photography. Relatively inexpensive digital cameras, image manipulation and categorization software, and internet access to information and sharing, has made photography fun and affordable. Anyone that has the slightest interest in photography can find equipment that meets their needs and learn without having to attend formal training or find an experienced mentor.
There are many websites that teach photography techniques, provide reviews of equipment, show samples of images, or just give advise. My goal is to identify for the amateur or enthusiast photographer, websites that provide information in a clear and concise manner that is understandable and visual.
As an enthusiast photographer, I learned photography basics working in our family owned One-Hour Photo Lab. I gained a love of capturing images that freeze moments in time for eternity. My interest is to continuously learn how to shoot the best possible images that are vibrant in color and emotion. My goal is to learn how to create images that will elicit emotion from the person viewing the images and help others.
If interested, here are some of my images for your pleasure:
The best advise I could provide someone in learning how to be a photographer is read a lot, look at professional photographers images, and go to shows and speak to photographers. Most importantly, practice, practice, practice, and have a lot of fun. If you're not having fun, it's not worth doing.
